More Bee Buzz

A while ago, I wrote a post discussing scientists' claims that a world without bees is a world without chocolate. So I found it incredibly synchronistic when recently Luna introduced me to Help the Honey Bees within a couple of weeks of my most favorite chocolate company promoting special bee chocolates for Mother's Day. Mother Earth. Bees. Chocolate. It all connects.

buzz.jpg

Available only for another few days, Burdick Chocolates is offering Chocolate Honey Bee Rounds:

These beautiful gold rounds are filled with our limited selection of chocolates celebrating the sweet themes of honey and roses. They feature our scrumptious Honey Bee, piped from a honey ganache and finished with dark chocolate, almond almond wings and white stripes. Our Bee Truffle is a rich honey, sauternes wine & dark chocolate truffle, hand-piped and finished with an edible gold bee. Scattered throughout are Rosehip Tea bonbons topped with candied rose petals.
whitebee.jpg

I can scarcely imagine anything that sounds more delicious! And the lucky person who finds one of two Prize White Honey Bees will win a monthly delivery of Burdick Chocolate for a full year.

Let's hope that the honey bees stay around longer than these chocolates.

Bee a Honey, Save the Bees

bee.png

Luna turned me on to this honey of a site: Help the Honey Bees.

Here you can learn all about the plight of our honey bees, how to save them, and even create a honey bee avatar for yourself. You can make bee portraits of your friends and send them via email, which in turn alerts them to the plight of the honey bees. See how nicely that works?

When your friends receive their Bee-mail, they will learn:

1. Honey bees are responsible for pollinating one-third of all the foods we eat, including many of our favorite fruits, nuts and vegetables.

2. Alarmingly, more than 25 percent of the Western honey bee population has disappeared over the last several winters, threatening our food supply and our way of life.

3. Many of the honey bee deaths are being attributed to a mysterious threat called Colony Collapse Disorder, which causes bees to suddenly leave their hive and die. Unfortunately, not much is known about this new threat.

4. Researchers are working to find a solution to Colony Collapse Disorder, but there are ways that we can all help the honey bees today. Learn more about bees and what you can do to help at helpthehoneybees.com.

I've seen lots of websites about bees and how we need to save them, but never before has one been so much fun. This site so appeals to my sense of aesthetics - I love everything about it - from the pretty graphics to the cheerful tune playing in the background (and I usually hate music on websites). And, of course, the adorable bees! You can download the homepage graphics as a screensaver and listen to the gently blowing breeze and the buzz of the bees right from your own computer. I'm such a geek for this kind of stuff.

So, have some fun. And help the honey bees!

I Am The Empress

Evn, our favorite Lover of Strife, says that while he doesn't normally go for this sort of thing, he agreed with his results to this test of What Tarot Card Are You? My results are uncanny given what today is and the fact that I turned up as the Empress in a reading I recently did for myself.

I'll take it.

You are The Empress

Beauty, happiness, pleasure, success, luxury, dissipation.

The Empress is associated with Venus, the feminine planet, so it represents, beauty, charm, pleasure, luxury, and delight. You may be good at home decorating, art or anything to do with making things beautiful.

The Empress is a creator, be it creation of life, of romance, of art or business. While the Magician is the primal spark, the idea made real, and the High Priestess is the one who gives the idea a form, the Empress is the womb where it gestates and grows till it is ready to be born. This is why her symbol is Venus, goddess of beautiful things as well as love. Even so, the Empress is more Demeter, goddess of abundance, then sensual Venus. She is the giver of Earthly gifts, yet at the same time, she can, in anger withhold, as Demeter did when her daughter, Persephone, was kidnapped. In fury and grief, she kept the Earth barren till her child was returned to her.

Book Meme

I've seen this meme circling the blogosphere and I suppose it was just a matter of time before I got tagged. I feel honored not only to have been chosen by a sister blogger whose stuff I like, Cosette at Pandora's Bazaar, but also to be included in such august company.

The meme:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

I may be on a bit of a tear here, but I swear the book closest to me for the past several days hasn't changed one bit. The Red Book by Sera Beak. So, here goes:

Know thyself, then be thyself. And of course, love thyself. And that's all She wrote.

Tag, you're it:

Lisa at Adorn + Cherish
Luna at Stars For Eyes
Slade at Shift Your Spirits

The Modern Witch's Cauldron?

This was too good not to blog.

A couple of days ago I needed to burn some paper. In a witchy way, not in the prevent-identity-theft sort of way. Now that I have a back deck this is much less likely to incur the wrath of the fire department by setting off the alarms. So I pulled out the trusted tool I've used for doing petition spells and anything else in which I needed to burn something: my Calphalon stainless stir fry pan.

p_l165p.jpg

After all this time I still haven't bought a proper cauldron, so the stir fry pan has been pressed into service on a number of occasions. I was always taught that the intention is more important than the trappings. And it worked, didn't it? Could it be that this is the modern witch's cauldron?

I wonder what Calphalon would have to say.

Trick or Treating On My Street

I found out this afternoon that my street, its own little micro-neighborhood, is Halloween central. There is a kids' park a few houses down which, as we speak, is filled with neighborhood tots having a party. I've been informed that there will be a parade down the street at 5:45 pm and the non-parental adults of the street are expected to sit on their stoops, kick back with a glass of wine, hand out candy and enjoy the show.

trick-or-treat.jpg

And now I'm am completely prepared.

Although I'm lacking the hat, I've dressed myself as the hip, fun witch that I am, replete with glow-in-the-dark pumpkin tshirt and pointy boots. When I went to the wine store and asked for a sufficiently "halloweeny" wine, they offered me "Evil," an Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. Perfect! And of course, living in the yuppy neighborhood I do, I am sure that I am far from the only one who will be treating my young neighbors to organic lollipops and other assorted candy. I have to shrug.

I'm so excited! Happy Halloween everyone!

Sheep Will Be Sheep

You'll know a Sheep gal when you see her. She's the one wearing the sumptuous cashmere sweater and the fabulous accessories sitting in her impeccably decorated home. Sheep, you see, are the aesthetic arbiters of the Chinese zodiac. These gentle creatures live for beautiful things. They may have the maxed out credit cards to prove it - as a sister sheep friend of mine likes to say, sheep eat paper - but that is beside the point.

In addition to being born in the Year of the Sheep, I also happen to be a Taurus. I got touched twice by the finger of the Goddess who bestows that which makes us crave sensual, earthly delights. So can you blame me for being unable to resist getting a Stephen Kris "Pink Mink" ring when one almost literally dropped in my lap? Surely you cannot!

TN_pink_mink.gif

Stephen Kris is a jewelry designer who lives in Greenwich Village. His "Pink Mink" ring is the original design worn by Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex and the City. Each sterling silver ring features a pouf of genuine mink topped with a freshwater pearl.

A dear friend of mine runs a jewelry gallery and has a number of friends who are jewelry designers. I happened to be visiting her when she opened a box she had just received from Stephen and she said, "You are going to love these." As she spread the treasures on the counter my pulse quickened. Trying on one ring after another I very nearly swooned. I couldn't leave without one.

They come in a variety of colors. Appealing to the witch in all of us, each color has a different meaning. The bright pink one Carrie wore was for Seduction. My new white one stands for Tranquility.

If the temptation strikes you, you can get your own "Pink Mink" ring at the Laura Preshong Gallery in Boston. Ask for Lisa.

Hex is Back!

It's been a long time coming, but finally season two of the best witchy show currently on television is airing on BBC America. Hex is the story of a group of students at a posh prep school who get caught up in the ultimate battle of good vs. evil.

hexheader2.jpg

I blogged my delight when the show first appeared this time last year. And now the story continues:

Return to Medenham Hall where the battle to save the world from evil is still raging.

At the close of the first season, Cassie's aborted baby boy is found alive and growing at a startlingly inhuman rate. His birth has unleashed an onslaught of fallen angels, whose only aim is to slay the mortals around them and gain control of the world as we know it. The human race's only chance for survival rests in the hands of Medenham student, Ella Dee. She is no mere mortal, but even with her mysterious powers, can she alone fight the powers of Hell on earth?

As season two opens, Medenham's warrior and savior, Ella (Laura Pyper), lies drugged and vulnerable in a psychiatric hospital. Former student and current ghost, Thelma (Jemima Rooper), races to save Ella, knowing full well that it was her selfish deal with fallen angel, Azazeal (Michael Fassbender), that landed Ella where she is now. Thelma's only hope of saving her is enlisting Ella's merely-mortal new boyfriend, Leon (Jamie Davis).

Back at school, Headmaster David (Colin Salmon) is forced to take drastic action to protest Ella's treatment. This leaves the school vulnerable to an evil spirit posing as a teacher, Jez (Sam Troughton), who uses alpha mean girl, Roxanne (Amber Sainsbury), to help him carry out his evil plan.

By appearing to Leon in his dreams, Thelma hopes that his feelings for Ella are strong enough to resist Roxanne's bullying demands that they all forget about her and move on. But just as Thelma starts to make progress, Azazeal sends the eerie Perie the Faerie (Katrine De Candole) to pose as Ella's new nurse. As Nurse Perie feeds her a drug that drains her telekinetic powers and threatens to leave her totally defenseless, will mere mortal Leon find it in himself to rescue Ella before it's too late?

The season premiere aired last Saturday but is being rerun tonight at 8 pm EDT, with a new episode airing at 9. It's going to be another season of good witchy fun.

Ten Small Things I Love for No Big Reason

In no particular order:

1. The little sparrows that flit and hop around the city. They are so cute and they are fearless. Sometimes I think they are talking to me.

2. The fact that, after years and years of having very short hair, my hair is now long enough to put into a pony tail and wear in a twist. My goal is to be able to stick it on the top of my head with chopsticks.

3. A cleverly turned phrase.

4. Slipping into a newly made bed - smelling the clean sheets and putting my head on the pillows which are all puffy from being newly fluffed and feeling my head sink into their softness.

5. Running into friends in unexpected places.

6. Interesting reflections. For example, in San Francisco the street names are often etched into the cement of the sidewalk at corners. Once when I had gone back for a visit, I was walking down California Street. It had rained the night before and although the sidewalk was dry, water was standing in the etched letters of "California" and it was reflecting the sun and buildings around it. I will never forgive myself for not having my camera at that moment to capture that image.

7. The particular texture of a French macaroon.

8. Color coordinated loads of laundry. Blues and greens in one load. Orange and pink in another.

9. The way it feels to walk on a well-made stiletto heel.

10. Fonts

Now, it's your turn - go forth to your own blog and make a list of Ten Small Things You Love for No Big Reason.

Inkblot Quiz

We've all heard of the Rorschach inkblot test. Well, now there is an online quiz that uses the inkblot concept to give you insight into your subconcious. How did I fare?

Your subconscious mind is driven most by Imagination
imagination_s.gif

You have a deep desire to use ideas to change the world around you. This drive influences you far more than you may realize on a conscious level.

You love to brainstorm and imagine new possibilities. The world is a fuller, richer place because you can contribute new ideas to any experience. Your natural curiosity inspires those around you and encourages them to come up with ideas they wouldn't have discovered without your help.

Your psyche is very rich; the more you learn about it, the more you will understand who you really are.

I found this at The Witch Within, where you can find a link to the test and a bugmenot.com account if you want to avoid registering to play. Thanks Mama Moon!

2. Open the book to page 123.

4. Post the text of the next four sentences on your blog, along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

The Urban Primitive, by Raven Kaldera & Tannin Schwartzstein

The shield sign supposedly belonged to a "lost tribe" of Africa; apparently the neighboring peoples still see this symbol marked into stone or wood, but they claim to know nothing about the lost tribe's history. This is unusual, since the people that we know as the Yoruba and the tribes they conquered kept extensive oral histories that are still used, but this one tribe has been effectively erased from living memory, so that tattoo is a reminder to me of fate.

Over my left breast I have a picture of Chiron the centaur, teacher of many famous heroes, instructing a woman in the use of a lyre; it symbolizes lyrical poetry and the arts. I focus on this tattoo when I have to do a difficult artistic work.

Coincidence? You know me better than that!

Your amazing energy draws people to you, and you give them great insight in return.
You hold a great amount of power over others, without even trying.

In love, you are sensitive and passionate. You connect with your partner on a very deep level.

I've Been Tagged!

There is a fun game of blog tag going on. When you get tagged, you have to post your five weirdest habits on your blog and then tag five other people. I've been tagged by Cosmic Debris and Mountain Cerridwen, two blog friends of mine.

My Five Weird Habits

1. I won't sign my name with a red pen. Ever. Someone told me once that there is a superstition that says it's bad luck to sign your name in red pen - I think this was in some Eastern European country but I can't remember - and it stuck with me. If anyone hands me a red pen to sign a credit card slip or something else, I ask them for another one.

2. I drink hot coffee with a straw. I picked this up from a friend of mine in San Francisco. She said she picked it up from a friend of hers in Seattle. I think it's a West Coast thing. But it sure keeps ill-fitting sippy lids from dribbling coffee down your front.

3. When I'm performing my morning ablutions, I have to do everything in the exact same order every day. If something happens to interrupt my routine, I get all discombobulated and forget to do something important.

4. I love to wear Petit Bateau t-shirts. I have an entire drawer full of them in many different colors and styles. Really. One whole drawer full of French children's t-shirts. (And no, I did not steal them from any French children!)

5. I talk in my sleep and have very vivid dreams - sometimes at the same time. One night when I was living in San Francisco and my boyfriend at the time was sleeping over, I woke him up in the middle of the night to tell him to get the pigeon out of the bedroom. I had been dreaming that a pigeon came in through the window and was hopping around on the floor.
