Mandala Madness

This morning I tried to create one of Thalia's thirteen-segment mandalas. I must not be as talented a mandala maker - or as good at math - as she is, and I just couldn't figure that one out. However, I really liked the photograph I was using so I stuck with what I know and made an eight-segment mandala from it. This doesn't have quite the same effect that it would have in thirteen, but is pretty nonetheless.

Okay, ma'am, just step away from the computer. That's it - nice and slow.

No need to back away. You are creating yourself, remember?
I gave the math in the comments for that post, but I'll put it here too and try to describe just what I'm doing.

I start with the wedge that has as its edge the purely vertical line; that way when you flip the next section horizontally it'll automatically line up since it's just a vertical line. Then merge visible (w/o the background on). Then the next one gets rotated 27.692 degrees. Then merge those; and the next one gets rotated 55.384. Then merge those (which should give you roughly a third of the circle) and rotate the next one 110.768 degrees. The one after that I believe you should be able to rotate negative 110.768 degrees. Then the last one you rotate 138.460 degrees (it will overlap a lot).

If it's off a bit you can always adjust + or - .1 degrees at a time until the little hairline crack between the sections closes up.

I hope that's all right. That's all in theory, anyway. Let me try it and I'll get back to you if I screwed up the math.

Mostly I was just winging it until they lined up by eye.

Yep. those numbers work. I'll put it up as a post on my blog, too.

step away? surely you jest!!
