Courage
It's Wednesday night, everything closed early, and most people are where they are going to be for the holiday or baking whatever they are going to take to whatever relative's home they will visit tomorrow to eat turkey and stuffing. Me? I'm sitting at home watching old episodes of television on Tivo and listening to music.
The song that is running through my head (and would be running on my iPod if only iTunes carried it) is the version of Courage by The Tragically Hip sung by Sarah Polley on the Sweet Hereafter soundtrack.
Courage Watch the band through a bunch of dancers
Quickly, follow the unknown
With something more familiar
Quickly, something familiar.Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter.Sleepwalk, so fast asleep
In a motel that has the lay of home
And piss on all of your background
And piss on all your surroundings.Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, couldn't come at a worse time. There's no simple explanation
For anything important any of us do
And yea the human tragedy
Consists in the necessity
Of living with the consequences
Under pressure, under pressure.Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, couldn't come at a worse time.

Call me obtuse but I've never understood the need to close early the day before a holiday. Perhaps it's my general lack of interest in most civic holidays. Perhaps I'm just cranky. ;)

I love that song. I can't remember what show I first heard it on, maybe Charmed? It is one of my all-time favorite songs and as soon as I saw the title to your post, the song started playing in my head. Thanks for reminding me of a beautiful song. Happy Thanksgiving.

Althought I did see Sweet Hereafter, I didn't remember the song from there. Charmed is where I heard it recently and thought - cool song.

I just heard one line on Charmed and decided to look it up on the net, find out who it's by. Found your blog. Cool, I'll be checking you out:)

Hi. I just got through watching charmed (my absolute favorite show) when the last song played was Courage. I really liked it, but never heard it before, so I remembered the last thing, which is courage couldnt come at a worse time. Its a pretty song, and I like the way the girl sings it. I cant find it anywhere tho.. sigh.
blessed be!

Hello from Northern California,
I just want to chime in with an "amen" about the Sarah Polley version of "Courage". I first heard it watching "The Great Hereafter" the Atam Egoyan film, and it actually made me appreciate the Tragically Hip, because it opened my eyes to what a great song that is, and how I'm a "Hip" fan.

You CAN get this song, sung by Sarah Polley, on ITunes. You must have to search for it differently. Search "Courage (Sam Dent Band Version) by Mychael Danna. I just bought it and I'm happy to have it. I heard it the first time on Charmed as well, the episode when Phoebe is forced to join with her sisters and vanquish Cole. It's the last scene, when Phoebe is crying on her bed, and her sisters come in to show her some support and love. Hope you find it and happy listening. Oh, thanks for this blog, as I didn't know the name of the song or the singer until I read this. THANKS!
